Global Unsubscribes

A top-level opt-out that removes a recipient from all email a sender could deliver, regardless of category or list.

What is a Global Unsubscribe?

A global unsubscribe is a one-click opt-out that removes the recipient from every email a sender might deliver, across every list, campaign, and subscription group. It is the strongest form of suppression, and it is the default expected behavior when a user clicks "unsubscribe from all."

Why it matters

Laws like CAN-SPAM and CASL require an easy way for recipients to stop receiving commercial mail, and courts interpret "easy" strictly. A global unsubscribe link satisfies that requirement and prevents accidental re-mailing from a forgotten segment. Marketers, compliance teams, and support leads should make sure this path is always available and honored within the legally required window.

How it works

When a user clicks a global unsubscribe link, the sending platform writes the address to the global suppression list with an unsubscribed reason. Every subsequent send filters against that list and skips the address. The suppression applies to all streams, including those the user was never subscribed to in the first place, unless the platform supports granular unsubscribe groups for non-global opt-outs.

Examples

  • A recipient clicking "unsubscribe from all" at the bottom of a newsletter
  • A support agent globally unsubscribing a complainant on behalf of the user
  • An automated webhook processing a List-Unsubscribe header click from a Gmail one-click button

Best practices

  • Place the global unsubscribe link in the footer of every marketing email
  • Honor the opt-out within 10 business days at most; faster is safer
  • Support the List-Unsubscribe and List-Unsubscribe-Post headers for one-click clients
  • Let Sendkit process global unsubscribes automatically rather than patching in custom code

FAQs

Does global unsubscribe apply to transactional email?

Legally, purely transactional messages are usually exempt, but most teams still respect the opt-out to avoid user frustration and complaints.

What if a user unsubscribes and then signs up again?

You must collect a fresh, explicit opt-in before re-mailing. Do not automatically remove the suppression based on a form submission alone.

How is global unsubscribe different from an unsubscribe group?

A group unsubscribe removes the user from a specific category like newsletters while keeping other subscriptions active. Global unsubscribe removes them from everything.
